Original Paintings
Oil on canvas, 55×45cm, framed in a white wooden ‘float’ frame.
This one of a kind original painting was inspired by a walk in Combe Hay near Bath, UK, through the long grass and wildflowers on a late summer evening. I wanted to capture the glow of the sun on the trees, the ox-eye daisies and the clover, and the silken coolness of the grass. I love how this painting brightens up every room it hangs in and the way the colours shift in the light. It’s a real painting of calm and joy, which I hope you feel when looking at it too.

Oil and gold leaf on canvas, 55×45cm, in a white wooden ‘float’ frame.
This one of a kind original painting was inspired by one of my favourite walks in Combe Hay, near Bath in the UK. I walk there often with my dog and I love the way the hill open up to the sunset, with changing colours and wildlife transforming the place every time I visit. This painting depicts a late summer sunset, as the seasons are starting to shift, the evenings beginning to chill and dew just forming on the grass. The gold leaf on the clouds in this piece glows and reflects different colours, really making the evening sunshine pop out of the picture.

Oil on stretched linen, 55x40cm.
This one of a kind original painting depicts a view in Tuscany, Italy seen during a summer holiday there. The sky was the most extraordinary colour, glowing red and orange and deep midnight blue with the heat of the day and made even more beautiful by a chilled glass of wine…
I think this painting can evoke holidays spent enjoying similar warm evenings, and contains all the excitement and possibility of views still to explore.

Footprints is part of my ongoing landscape series exploring identity and place, and the relationship between human stories and the natural world. I am drawn to painting landscapes with small figures, showing the vastness of the world against the size of an individual. This allows for an anonymity in the figure, which transcends time and encourages the viewer to project their own ideas, stories or identities onto these figures. I see my work speaking to the way we relate to landscape and the memories and emotions tied to it. This piece took its inspiration from Gwithian beach in Cornwall, which although almost empty was imprinted with numerous trails of footprints from the people who had walked there before me that day. I wanted to capture this view as it embodied the invisible multitudes who have related to and influenced that beach over many years, with all their stories and emotions about it. I also see this image as reminiscent of the encouragement to ‘leave nothing but footprints’ when we visit places of beauty, and to speak to the ways we influence spaces just by our presence there and so should take care to step lightly and consciously on the earth.

Oil on stretched linen, 110×60cm, in a white wooden ‘float’ frame.
This piece is part of my ongoing murmurations series. This one of a kind original painting was inspired by views of murmurations around Glastonbury and Bath and a glorious sunset in the Lake District. The background view and sunset are from the Lake District, where the light and the water glowed the most incredible pink, and I included a murmuration as this scene was just the perfect backdrop for the graceful and magical dance of starlings in wetland habitats.

Oil on stretched linen, 100×30cm, in a white wooden ‘float’ frame.
This original painting was inspired by one of my visits to Dunfanaghy in Ireland, and the beautiful Marble Hill beach. The sunlight danced on the water, waves crashed into the dark rocks, and the mountains in the distance were a soft purple haze. I have compressed the scene here to include all the elements of the view that captivated me on that particular day, resulting in a magical version of Marble Hill as it appears in my memory.

Oil on canvas. This landscape painting of a golden sunset was inspired by an evening walk along the boardwalk at Cuan Na Ri in Donegal in Ireland. This same evening also inspired the painting ‘On the Boardwalk at Cuan Na Ri’. The light was incredible, glowing over the mountains and sparkling on the water and it was deeply inspiring. I wanted this painting to feel full of the peace and promise of that evening, to appear like a magical landscape like something from a dream or a fantasy and to inspire walkers and adventurers as they look on it in the home. Sized to make a lovely addition to a dining room, living room, bedroom or other large wall that is in need of a focal piece of art that tells a story.

This one of a kind original painting depicts the beach huts at West Witterings beach, a place I loved to visit when I was growing up in the Chichester area. This painting evokes summer days lugging a picnic basket and buckets and spades, towels covered in sand and long walks along the seafront. I was inspired by the colour and perspective of the beach huts running into the distance and the way the sunlight plays on the white sand and the water.

This painting was inspired by a walk on New Year’s Eve along the boardwalk at Cuan Na Ri in Donegal, Ireland. The colours created by the light that evening were so atmospheric and the landscape felt full of the weight of centuries of history and so many layers of story and folklore. It was such an inspiring scene to witness at the end of the year and the birth of a new one so I painted this landscape to be full of all that sense of story and also the feeling of hope and a new dawn.
This landscape painting also meant a lot to me as it was the first painting where I felt like my artistic voice was really coming through in my landscapes and it was also shortlisted for the RA Summer Exhibition in 2019, so there is the sticker and chalk mark from that on the back of the piece.

This painting depicts a view along the river Avon where I have often kayaked along the water or water on the footpaths by the riverbanks. To me this painting is a heady mix of the colours at the end of summer, as the autumnal evenings start to close in and the sunsets get all the more intense.

An original oil painting produced in autumn 2022 in my home studio. This painting was an experiment in reproducing cloud formations for me, and an opportunity to focus on the interplay of light and shadow in both the clouds and on the sea below. I love playing with depicting light in painting, so this was a joy to produce. It was painted from a reference photo taken of a cloudy sky over the sea and wet sand of Falcarragh beach in Donegal.

This painting depicts a view just outside of Bath, UK. In early 2021 there was a deep snowfall, and everyone rushed to this steep hill with their sleds, both makeshift and impressive, to play in the snow. I photographed adults and children flying down the snowy hill and knew I had to paint this sweet and joyful scene one day. I painted it eventually in the final months of 2022, as I was feeling the pull of winter once more in preparation for Christmas.

This scene was inspired, along with my painting ‘sledding’ by the snowfall in Bath in 2021. This view is of the old Somerset coal canal locks in the woods in Combe Hay. After the snow had settled the sky cleared and there was a beautiful sunset which reflected upon the stream and the snow melt and the snow itself and the woods were so quiet and beautiful. I thought the colours of this also really nicely echoed the history of this place, with coal being transported down the canal to provide fuel, soon to burn as brightly as the orange and pink of the sky. I also love how the interplay between human history and nature is played out in this spot, with the remains of the old locks emerging in the woods completely by surprise to an unsuspecting walker or rambler.

This scene was inspired by the snowfall in Bath in 2019 and I walk I took up by Brown’s Folly and Sally in the Woods in Bath, UK. This area is well known and loved among walkers, and explorers, and there are always several people investigating the caves remaining from the old stone mining that took place all over the hills in the woodland. There was the most beautiful sunset over the valley with the city of Bath nestled below, and the snow lit up in pinks and blues and gold. The snow was very deep that year and made the city look like something from a fairytale. I thought this was a beautiful and unusual way to view the city and I think it makes a lovely painting.

This painting was inspired by the starling murmurations in the winter on the somerset levels. I love the magic of murmurations in England and the way the light often falls at this time of year sets of the majesty of the starlings flight even more. This painting depicts a view in Southstoke, Bath, UK where I often walk our dog. I love watching the light change over these fields with the seasons, and seeing the colour of the fields and the leaves shift in tandem. I have so many inspiration images of this view and others like it that I knew I had to set these patchwork of fields in paint.

‘Magic on the Rooftops’, Watercolour on paper, 10x8 inches/25.5x20.5 cm.
Inspired by the sky view from our home, the chimneys and rooftops silhouetted against an incredible sunset. The clouds appeared almost on fire in the light, the tips dark as if a storm was approaching, even though moments before it had been only slightly overcast. I gazed out over the houses in awe watching the colours deepen and intensify, as the clouds slid gently across the sky.

I have taken every effort to depict my work accurately in these images in different lights, however variation from photograph to reality is often unavoidable - generally with the original looking brighter and clearer than photographs depict. If you are concerned about colour variation I would advise looking at images carefully across different devices before purchasing.

‘Sea of Tranquility’, Watercolour on paper, 25.5x20.5 cm/ 10x8 inches
Inspired by a view I know well, this piece depicts the beaches on the South Coast where I grew up and spent many years during my childhood. The sight of wooden groynes fills me with nostalgia, a view associated forever for me with collecting seashells and identifying the items washed up on shore, the smell and slimy feel of seaweed underfoot, and splashing in the deep pools formed by rolling waves. I painted this from a wonderful reference photograph by Vicky Davis.

‘The Light at Widemouth’, Gouache on paper, 25.5x20.5cm/ 10x8 inches.
This piece was inspired by a beautiful trip to Bude last year, with friends. We had planned to visit again in 2020 as a group, for another weekend of sun, surf and laughter, and were very sorry to have to cancel. I wanted to cherish the memory of the previous visit by painting the scene that caught my eye as we walked along the cliff’s edge last year. The sun sparkled through the overcast clouds, casting a spotlight on the dark ocean waves.

‘Summer Haze’, watercolour on paper, 25.5x20.5 cm/ 10x8 inches.
Inspired by a walk from my home in Bath, as the summer heat evaporated the final dew of spring during an early season heatwave. The leaves were still new on the trees and the grass the fresh green of early in the year. I fell in love with this view the first time I saw it, and wanted to convey the hazy and dreamy vision of a simple walk, feeling the sun warm the skin and watching the sudden transformation from spring to summer.

I have taken every effort to depict my work accurately in these images in different lights, however variation from photograph to reality is often unavoidable - generally with the original looking brighter and clearer than photographs depict. ‘Flames of Promise’, watercolour on paper, 25.5x20.5 cmx 10x8 inches.
A breathtaking sunset seen from my home inspired this painting. The colours and the dramatic scale of the clouds were awe inspiring, so huge and deep and colourful. I knew I had to commit it to paper and preserve the enormous beauty of that evening.

‘Raspberry Shore’, watercolour on paper, 25.5x20.5 cm/ 10x8 inches.
I so enjoyed exaggerating the colours in this piece to depict the heat and joy of a summer evening on the beach. Thinking of ice cream sundaes, BBQs with family and friends, I imbued this painting with the bright colours I associate with them. The shimmering sun on the surf and the diving flight of gulls was wonderful to portray. The inspiration for this painting was my upbringing on the south coast, and the multitude of childhood days and pictures I have of the sea at Bognor Regis.

‘Burning Beauty in the Evening’, watercolour on paper, 25.5x20.5 cm/ 10x8 inches.
Another gorgeous sunset in Bath. Earlier in the season, this was one of the first paintings in this collection, and I absolutely fell in love with the rich vibrant colours I got to use for this piece. It was a moment of standing in awe at the art nature produces, filled with eagerness to preserve and mix those colours myself.

‘Swan Lake’, watercolour on paper, 25.5x20.5 cm/ 10x8 inches.
Inspired by a stunning sunset over Bath. The colours were cool and bright even in the midst of summer when we perhaps expect more vibrant reds and oranges. Painting the streaked clouds was a real challenge, balancing their delicacy with the bold shadows of the other clouds surrounding them.

‘Into the Twilight’, 25.5x20.5 cm/ 10x8 inches.
Moody stormy skies hovering over the fields below. I stood high on a hill on the outskirts of Bath looking out across the landscape, as the sun dipped below the horizon, and watched the clouds gathering, deep and blue. The sunset blazed like an inferno, as though the sky were made of smoke.

‘Smoke in the Sky’, watercolour on paper, 25.5x20.5 cm/ 10x8 inches.
I exaggerated the appearance of this piece, partly due to the nature of painting in watercolours where yellow and blue if they touch will of course turn green, and partly because I wanted to enjoy the added intensity of colour that separation of the yellow clouds and the blue sky would bring. The cloud in the landscape that inspired this was golden and lit from below with a delicate vibrancy and glow that I could spend forever trying to replicate. It appeared like an ethereal column in the sky, as bizarre as it was beautiful.

‘Fanad Head Lighthouse’, watercolour on paper, 25.5x20.5 cm/ 10x8 inches.
Inspired by a visit to Donegal last year where we got to tour the lighthouse at Fanad Head. I have always wanted to explore a lighthouse, so this was a real childhood fantasy come true. The sight of the white building standing out on the cliff’s edge was absolutely iconic, a view that almost seemed to not be real.

‘Sunset Over Brown’s Folly’, watercolour on paper, 25.5x20.5 cm/ 10x8 inches.
Another ode to the shifting light and landscape of the hills at the back of our old home. On the evening this was inspired by we walked to the top of the hill, armed with a blanket and a bottle of cider each, to sit on the huge boulders and grassy slope and watch the sunset. It was a truly magical evening, taking the time to soak in the view and listen to the evening song of the forest, savouring the tang of local somerset cider and the hazy warmth of a summer’s evening.

‘Pale Moon’, watercolour on paper, 25.5x20.5 cm/10x8 inches.
There is always something quite magical I think about the moment when the moon first appears in the sky, pale and soft, intensifying as the sky fades from bright blue to the indigo of evening. I painted this inspired by that moment and by the elegant silhouettes of trees in the low sunlight. It is an amalgam of a few different views I have taken reference photos from, and contains within it the mixture of night and day that so defines the twilight.

‘Bubblegum Clouds’, watercolour on paper, 25.5x20.5 cm/ 10x8 inches.
Inspired by a beautiful video I watched during the beginning of lockdown by the Instagrammer Fiona Annal of her regular walks around Orkney. I couldn’t resist painting these beautiful clouds, with the long fenced path beneath them - a sight so ubiquitous across England and Scotland of rolling fields and hills lined by rustic fences. While each landscape has its own character and defined individuality, I still love spotting the familiar in new spaces as much as the unique features of that scene.

‘Dreaming of Spring’, watercolour on paper, 25.5x20.5 cm/ 10x8 inches.
This painting captures the early spring evenings of this year, when the ground was still wet and heavy with the rains of winter and the trees had begun to wake for the season. The sunsets at that time of year are always imbued for me with the promise of the heated and sundrenched sunsets to come in only a matter of short months, the colours of the pale spring sunsets rich with the hues of petals and blossoms they foretell. I almost think of them as tulip petals become clouds, the same pigment and rain sweet sensations filling them both.

‘Fire and Ice’, watercolour on paper, 25.5x20.5 cm/ 10x8 inches.
The exaggerated contrast of colours in this painting brought me so much joy to paint. The reference for it was a vibrant sunset in Bognor, where the tide had rolled out and transformed the sand into a refracted mirror covered with rivulets and streams of the kind I used to chase to the shore’s edge when I was a child. I wanted to add the drama of high summer to this piece, with its intense shadows and sun rays, the contrast between full sun and cool shade, and the contrast of the beach of sun baked sand and skin and the cool ocean waves.

‘Rooftop Clouds’, watercolour on paper, 25.5x20.5 cm/ 10x8 inches.
This piece was inspired by the view from an upstairs window in our old home. It was one of the highlights of each day for me, gazing out over the houses and watching the kaleidoscope of colours and cloud formations emerge every evening. The evening light used to cast incredible shadows of gold on the floor and I watched hungrily as the sun dipped beneath the rooftops and trees below.

One more glorious sunset inspired by the view from a window at home, waiting with awe and anticipation as I watched the intense colour of this evening roll in. No one can live up to the palette and artistry of nature, but I nevertheless wanted to imbue this with all the intensity and loveliness of that evening light and preserve it in a form beyond memory. I love painting with purples, the way they pop against yellow paint an absolute joy, as well as the breadth of sensation it invokes and its flexibility, from delicate details to bold intense brushstrokes.

‘Green and Pleasant Land’, watercolour on paper, 25.5x20.5 cm/ 10x8 inches.
This painting was produced after a recent walk in the countryside on the outskirts of Bath looking out over Midford. I really enjoyed the challenge of painting the patchwork of fields and the dip and curve of the sloping hills in perspective with the distance, gradually shrinking and becoming more hazy as they disappeared into the horizon.

‘Lemon Blueberry Skies’, watercolour on paper, 25.5x20.5 cm/ 10x8 inches.
I saw this view while driving home one day as the sun descended for the day. I pulled over in a layby on the outskirts of Bath to watch the colours shift and snap a few reference photos. The sky was so yellow it looked like a lemon peel, lighting up the shimmery surface of the wheat stalks over the field.

Watercolour on thick St Cuthbert’s Mill paper, 25x20.5cm.
This is the sunset study I painted for the second session of my online painting classes. This piece focuses on the complementary pairing of blue and orange, and the impact you can achieve with colour gradients. This study has a sister painting, ‘Sunset Study II’. There are slight differences between them, as hues, brushstrokes, and my placement of trees and shrubs varies between them. Each one unique as much as they are alike.
Watercolour on thick St Cuthbert’s Mill paper, 25x20.5cm.
I painted a practice sunset study before filming the painting of ‘Sunset Study I’, just to check I could talk through each step for my online painting class. And so, the study has a sister painting, ‘Sunset Study II’. There are slight differences between them, as hues, brushstrokes, and my placement of trees and shrubs varies between them. Each one unique as much as they are alike.
This painting was inspired by a sunset and fluffy clouds over the water and boats at Dell Quay in Chichester. I focused on the colour and texture of the clouds, the dreamlike and golden glow they gave off in the evening sun, when painting this piece. It is about hoping for calm seas in life and trusting in your ability to navigate what comes your way.
